The NHL is taking a close look at its most active players for the first time.
The league announced Tuesday that three players — Nicklas Backstrom, Nicklas Hjalmarsson and Ryan Getzlaf — have already retired.
The next three players who will be retired are Jordan Staal, Ryan Kesler and Joe Thornton.
All three players have been active on Twitter for at least a year.
The NHLPA will meet next week to discuss the future of the game.
The Players’ Union and the players union have been working together to try and come up with a solution to the issue of player retirement.
The players union is expected to release its first policy document in the fall.
